Special report: Internal situation in Palestine

GAZA, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Attorney General Ahmed al-Mughani was released by Hamas executive force in Gaza on Thursday, his office said in a statement.

The release came several hours after al-Mughani was detained and questioned by the Hamas executive force in Gaza earlier on Thursday, the statement said.

Saber Khalifa, spokesman for Hamas executive force said earlier that al-Mughani was detained "for trying to hide 120 files of senior Palestinian officials and security chiefs, who are involved in crimes of murder and corruption."

"The arrest took place into the attorney general office," said Khalifa, denying a report by pro-Fatah news website "Palpress" saying that his car was stopped in one of Gaza City's streets, and was detained along with his bodyguard.

On Wednesday, Yousef al-Mansy, minister of justice in the deposed government headed by Hamas in Gaza, fired al-Mughani and ordered the force to detain him for questioning. Al-Mansy appointed Moneer al-O'qbi as acting attorney general. Hamas and its rival Fatah movement headed by President Mahmoud Abbas have been trading accusations, during which several officials from both side had been deposed, especially after Hamas unseated Abbas' security forces and controlled Gaza on June 14.
