The following four pieces of advice are indicated by WANG zhong-yan , a professor of Zhongsan University who is an authority in applying linguistics , when he is asked to written an essay to contribute to the special forum of foreign languages: The prospects for the future which is sponsored by Foreign Languages Research Editorial Department in the early this year.

1. Identifying the key of foreign language.

There are so many contents in a language we should learn, so we must identify which we should learn firstly. It is well know that the skeleton of a language includes general vocabularies, general clause structures, general collocations, idioms, sayings etc. Furthermore, the context and social background are required also.

2. Based on your characteristics, cultivating your capability in which you are lame.

If you are good at remembering you would better practise more exercises of listening and reading; or if you are apt to logical thinking, the best method for you is to collect a great deal of materials and to analyze them profoundly.

3. Confidence and patience are required.

It is extremely clear that everyone can grasp a foreign language or more successfully, which is not related to a high genius, but related to the process of learning a foreign language. On the other hand, you should study hard and concentrate your attention on your study. Learning a foreign language is like running a Marathon, or like an old Chinese saying: Paying more, gaining more.

4. Comprehending the western style of thinking.

We should know that the most marvelous difference between Chinese and Latin-languages is the style of thinking. Generally, Chinese people prefer to adopt more logical, brief, and gradual expression, on the contrary, the western people have biases of more abstract, oblique, and private expression. Comprehending it can help you grasp a fluent and genuine foreign language.
