BAGHDAD, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and 10 others wounded in shootout, mortar and bomb attacks in Baghdad on Saturday, while the Iraqi police picked up 21 bodies from the capital's streets, an Interior Ministry source said.

Mortar rounds struck the Jesr Diyala neighborhood in southern Baghdad in the afternoon, killing two people and wounding four others, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Another mortar barrage rocked Baghdad's western suburb of Abu Ghraib, killing a civilian and wounding another, said the source.

In central Baghdad, a roadside bomb went off near an Iraqi army patrol in the Bab al-Mu'adham area, damaging a military vehicle and wounding three soldiers aboard, he added.

Elsewhere, mortar rounds landed on the Ghazaliyah neighborhood in western Baghdad, wounding two people, the source said.

In addition, a civilian was killed when a U.S. patrol opened fire on him in the Ubaidi neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad, the source said, without saying why the U.S. troops shot the man dead.

The U.S. military did not confirm the incident yet.

Separately, unknown gunmen showered Isam Basheer, a physician, with bullets in Baghdad western neighborhood of Jamia, the source said, citing medical report from the Yarmouk Hospital where the body was transferred.

Also on Saturday, Iraqi police patrols collected 21 unidentified bodies in the capital, including 18 in the Karkh areaon the west part of the Tigris River that bisects the Iraqi capital, the source said.

The bullet-riddled bodies were bound, blindfolded, showing signs of torture, he said.

Violence and gruesome finding of unidentified bodies continued in the capital despite a more-than-five-month U.S. and Iraqi security plan aiming at putting rampant violence under control.
