LIMA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The second trial against Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori has been suspended until Friday due to the death of Supreme Judge Jose Pelaez's father-in-law.

    The Supreme Court's Special Penal Hall (SPE) court took the decision at the request made by the Public Ministry.

    The suspension came after Fujimori was sentenced the day before to six years in prison for abuse of power and ordered to pay a fine of 400,000 new soles (around 132,000 U.S. dollars).

    Tuesday's sentence was handed down for Fujimori's role in ordering a warrantless search of the house of his spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos's wife in November 2000.

    Fujimori also faces charges of murder, kidnapping and corruption. He may face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

    Peru's prosecutor and the Public Ministry alleged that Fujimori ordered a massacre in the Lima suburb of Barrios Altos in 1991 and the kidnapping of a group of students and teachers at Lima's La Cantuta University in 1992.

    He was also accused of being responsible for kidnapping journalist Gustavo Gorriti and businessman Samuel Dyer.

    However, Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, denied knowledge of the death squad, which was believed to have carried out the atrocities.

    Fujimori also denied that he was a friend of Montesinos, who was in charge of Peru's intelligence department during Fujimori's rule and had been charged with bribing opposition lawmakers. This scandal triggered the collapse of Fujimori's government in 2000.

    He then fled to Japan, where he has a dual citizenship because of his Japanese parents.

    The 69-year-old was arrested in November 2005 after fleeing to Chile, where he had been preparing for a possible comeback to Peru's political stage, an effort which failed before he was extradited to Peru in September.
